2021 MARITIME AND ARCHIPELAGIC NATION AWARENESS MONTH CELEBRATION

1. The Department of Education (DepEd) enjoins all teaching and nonteaching personnel, officials, learners, and stakeholders to participate in the 2021 Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA MO) Celebration. This celebration is conducted annually by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 316, s. 2017 declaring the month of September every year as the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA MO). This celebration is headed by the National Coast Watch Council (NCSC), the national coordinating agency on maritime and archipelagic issues and concerns.

2. The theme for MANA MO Celebration this year is Our Seas, Our Livelihood, Our Heritage: Connecting Lives and Nations, which calls for a nationwide effort to raise consciousness on the preservation of marine biodiversity and cultural heritages and promotion of maritime industries and security as important fields in economic sustainability.

3. The celebration aims to

a. foster a collective promotion and protection of Philippines' maritime biodiversity, ecosystem, and cultural heritages; and

b. raise awareness and consciousness of maritime and archipelagic issues and concerns for a sustainable future.

4. All DepEd offices and schools are enjoined to participate in meaningful undertakings, which highlight the promotion and protection of maritime biodiversity, ecosystem, and cultural heritages. DepEd offices are encouraged to support national and local government activities in their respective communities. Also, they are encouraged to conceptualize worthwhile activities for teachers, learners, and their families by utilizing online platforms. The activities must entail learners' voluntary participation and parental consent, and they must be conducted virtually and in compliance with community quarantine guidelines.

5. In support of the event, the Bureau of Learning Delivery and the Public Affairs Service will host online activities on DepEd social media channels. The DepEd MANA MO Webinar Series, an online lecture series that will run for the entire month of September, aims to raise awareness of maritime biodiversity, heritage, protection, and security. Learners are also encouraged to participate in the Essay Writing, Slogan-Writing, and Poster-Making Contests, which will allow them to demonstrate their ingenuity and creativity while highlighting the maritime cultural legacy and biodiversity.

7. Each region may send one official entry for each of the contests. Entries must be submitted through email to manamo@deped.gov.ph not later than September 20, 2021, with the subject, (ex. The email should include consolidated entries of the region. It should include the (a) endorsement letter; (b) application form of each contestant; and (c) pdf file of entry for essay and jpg file for slogan and poster entries. Any contest entry that does not include all the required documents will be invalidated.
